Eleni& Nikos
Twelve summers on the same island
Eleni's family have run the taverna at the bottom of the steps since 1974. Nikos came for two weeks in 2015 to help a friend fix a boat, and has been finding reasons to stay ever since. The boat, for the record, was never fixed.
We are marrying in the chapel above the taverna, and eating on the terrace below it, which is the shortest wedding commute in recorded history.
Sunday, hour by hour
Στέψη
The crowning at Agios Nikolaos, Oia. A short orthodox service — stand where you like, everybody does.
Δεξίωση
Drinks on the caldera terrace, timed so that nobody misses the sunset. Not even the photographer.
Δείπνο
Dinner under the vines. Fish from the morning boat and far too much wine from Nikos's cousin's vineyard.
Χορός
Kalamatianós first, everything else after. There is a plate-smashing rumour; management neither confirms nor denies.
Ferries, flights and donkeys
Fly into Thira, or take the Blue Star from Piraeus — eight hours, but the arrival into the caldera is worth the crossing. Oia is forty minutes from the port by road. Please do not attempt the old steps in wedding shoes; we say this from experience, and so does Nikos's brother, who still limps.
